You could try to train it out of him. Reward him when he doesn't act like that and punish when he does, but I'm not sure how well it would actually work.

[It worked with Odin and the saddle, but...Quake is probably a lot different. It's also an issue in his behavior, not loathing towards an object, so there's that. Good grief...]
