but er...no he didn't literally. it's just a figure of speech for when a guy does something to protect his special lady. you know like in the fairy tales? knights in shining armor protecting princesses from dragons and evil witches and stuff like that? ...though in this case i guess you were just a few costumes off of it being literal.
