islandshore: (Rival Riku wants to battle!)

11 - video/action for goldenrod;

[It's been about a week or two since Riku's had a Gym Battle, so when he approaches Whitney, boy does he look eager to dive right in.

Instead of sending his Pokémon out right away, he waits for Whitney to make her move. Within seconds, she sends out her Girafarig, prompting Riku to laugh. So this is the girl Puddles' heart is set on...

Normal/Psychic, which means ghost attacks won't do any good. That leaves dark as the main weakness. After a bit of deliberation, Riku tosses a Pokéball forward, and Jaws appears with a roar.

He does take a moment to look at his opponent with a frown. Isn't that Puddles'...?]

Don't just sit there. Use Crunch!

[With an apologetic growl, Jaws dives at the Girafarig, clamping down on her neck. In return, the Girafarig retaliates with psychic, knocking Jaws loose. Nevertheless, he charges at his opponent, aiming to chomp again, but this time he winds up being hit by the Girafarig's stomp.

The battle goes on for a little while, and Jaws winds up with his share of bruises. However, his higher level and super effective attacks soon become too much for the little giraffe, and Whitney returns her to the Pokéball. Then, she calls out her Clefable.

Immediately, Riku calls Jaws back to his ball; he's had a nice workout, but it's time to take it up a notch. In Jaws' place, Slacker appears, watching the Clefable curiously. With the target in sight, Riku sends Slacker forward, commanding him to use Double Kick! His kicks hit hard, but the Clefable quickly retaliates with Blizzard, which is super effective in its own right. Fortunately, Slacker's more than twenty levels above the Clefable and manages to stay in the ring.

With more kicks and a bit of toxic spikes, Slacker eventually prevails. But then...

The Miltank appears. Though at first the battle goes off to a good start, with Slackers kicks roughing up the cow, while his endurance helps him withstand numerous roll outs. However, soon the Miltank uses Attract, which makes the battle much tougher.

Tougher, but not impossible. After all, Toxic Spikes gave the Miltank nasty poisoning, and though Slacker refuses to attack at first, soon he snaps out of it, delivering a finishing blow.

By the end of the battle, Whitney is sobbing up a storm, but Riku doesn't seem that phased. He takes the badge and squirt bottle with a smirk; that's all he was here for.]

[ooc: Feel free to spectate or whatever you wish! He'll be leaving the gym shortly after the battle, so he can be encountered outside, too.]

[ Kairi would like to be there, Slacker. Give her some time. ]

Is he your first, Riku?

That's right. He and Highwind are the two I've had the longest.

[Aww, okay. Slacker gets it now! He'll just... wander around a bit. They're heading out of the Gym now.

So what does Riku do? He sends out his grumpy Pidgeot, who screeches in protest. Stupid snow.]

So this must be Highwind!

[ no grumpiness on this end. ]

[Yes, yes it is! Once he hears Kairi's voice, he puffs out his chest and spreads his wings. Aw yeah, he's a macho bird.

...and Riku shakes his head.]

Yeah, that's Highwind alright.

Nice to meet you! Do all the birds get this huge?

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-13 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about Spearows, but I did see a steel type bird that's pretty big. It's about as tall as me.

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure it can. I've never seen one up close, though.

Wow... [ Kairi's definitely intrigued. ] It sounds like there are a lot of really interesting Pokémon out there.

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right on the mark. If you think Highwind's impressive...

[He'll send the grumpy bird back into his ball and send out his Haunter. Hi, five-foot ghost all up close to the camera.]

Whoa--!!

[ what the-- what is THAT? ]

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Have some weird, staticy noise and creeeepy faces. At least until Riku pushes him away.]

That's Phantom.

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there are ghost Pokémon too.

[And boy is he a naughty little ghost. Currently? He's messing with Riku's hair.]

[identity profile] pluckycharm.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I should be taking notes or something.

[ going for the ghost-swept look there, I see. ]

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Ack. Hold on, he's smoothing down his hair and sending Phantom back into the ball.]

You've got time. There are a lot of types, and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Learning them's the key to winning battles.

[identity profile] pluckycharm.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You mean that girl's Pokémon were all one type?

[ a giraffe, a pink... thing, and a... cow. Huh. ]

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the Girafarig's a psychic and a normal type.

[identity profile] pluckycharm.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
They can have more than one--?

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-14 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some have two types. Phantom's ghost poison and Highwind's normal flying.

Seafoam's just water... I think.

[identity profile] islandshore.livejournal.com 2010-12-15 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Same with Jaws, and Flare's just fire. Not every Pokémon is mixed.

They're about as different as people are, huh? I can't wait to see more of them.
